Sonia Israilov

Perinatal Mental Health & Women's Therapy in Burlington, Ontario
Counselling Intern, RP (Qualifying)

Introduction

Hi, I’m Sonia — a counselling intern completing my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology, and a Registered Nurse with clinical experience in fertility care, menopause research, and cancer support. I offer reduced-rate therapy for women at $125 per session, in person in Burlington and virtually across Ontario, supervised by Christina Janiga. I work with women navigating perinatal mental health, postpartum anxiety, perimenopause and menopause, infertility, anxiety, and the emotional weight of working in healthcare. My background in nursing means I understand from the inside what it is to care for others while quietly carrying your own.

I am particularly passionate about supporting health-care workers, perinatal mental health, and supporting individuals through:

  • Infertility and reproductive challenges
  • Postpartum mental health

My goal is to help clients feel understood, supported, and empowered as they work toward greater clarity, resilience, and emotional wellbeing.

Every session with Sonia is clinically supervised by Christina Janiga — Registered Psychotherapist, Certified EMDR Therapist, and Approved EMDR Consultant. You receive the care of a thoughtful, committed therapist at a rate designed to make support genuinely accessible.

Supporting women through infertility and reproductive challenges

Navigating infertility is one of the most emotionally isolating experiences a woman can face — often invisible to the people around her, and rarely given the psychological support it deserves. With direct clinical experience in fertility care as a nurse, I understand this terrain in a way that goes beyond textbook knowledge. Therapy provides a space to grieve, to process, and to find steadiness — whatever the outcome.

My Approach to Therapy

With a background in healthcare and years of experience supporting individuals during vulnerable moments, I bring a compassionate, grounded, and deeply human approach to therapy. My approach to therapy draws from Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based practices, and trauma-informed care.

In our sessions, I’ll help you:

  • Navigate life challenges and changes
  • Re-build your sense of self-worth
  • Reconnect with your inner strengths
  • Build self-compassion, confidence, resilience, and empowerment

How DBT and mindfulness-based practices can help with women’s health concerns:

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and mindfulness-based practices can offer meaningful support for women navigating a wide range of health concerns, particularly those that involve emotional intensity, chronic stress, or changes in identity and the body.

These approaches can help with:

  • Learning emotion regulation skills and building emotional resiliency
  • Promote a non-judgmental awareness of present-moment experience
  • Noticing physical sensations, thoughts, and emotions with greater clarity and compassion
  • Fostering a more trusting and respectful relationship with one’s body
  • Enhancing communication skills

About Sonia

Throughout my career in nursing, I have worked closely with people navigating emotionally complex experiences, including working in fertility, cancer care, and menopause research. These experiences sparked a strong interest in understanding the psychological and emotional factors that shape how people cope with stress, uncertainty, and life’s challenges. My curiosity about human behaviour, relationships, and healing ultimately led me to pursue counselling psychology.

My professional and personal experiences have also given me insight into the emotional challenges that can arise during times of uncertainty, particularly for individuals navigating health-related concerns, fertility journeys, and significant life transitions.

I believe that many struggles – including anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship difficulties, and perfectionism – often have deeper roots connected to past experiences, coping patterns, and life transitions. Through therapy, I work collaboratively with clients to better understand these patterns while developing practical tools for holistic healing, growth and change.
