Therapy for Women in Burlington & Online Across Ontario

Providing trauma-informed psychotherapy and counselling for women navigating anxiety, trauma, life transitions, postpartum, and perimenopause. In person in Burlington and virtually across Ontario.

You’ve been holding it together for a long time.

Maybe you’ve been carrying anxiety that never fully switches off — a low-level hum of worry, a body that won’t quite relax, thoughts that circle back no matter how tired you are. Maybe something happened — a birth, a relationship ending, a milestone that felt more like a loss than a celebration — and you haven’t had the space to fully process it. Or maybe there’s nothing you can point to directly, just a quiet sense that you’ve drifted away from yourself and you’re not sure how to find your way back.

Whatever brings you here, you’re not imagining it. And you don’t need to be in crisis to deserve real support.

Women’s mental health is complex, layered, and deeply shaped by lived experience. You deserve a therapist who understands that.

At Christina Janiga Psychotherapy, we work specifically with women navigating anxiety, trauma, major life transitions, postpartum and perinatal mental health, perimenopause and menopause, relationship and attachment wounds, and the quiet erosion of self-worth that so many women carry without ever naming it.

You are tired of managing this alone.

Therapy for Women at Christina Janiga Psychotherapy helps you:

Who benefits most from therapy for women?

Women’s therapy at our Burlington practice is best suited to adult women who are ready to explore the roots of what they’re experiencing rather than simply cope with the surface. This might be your first time in therapy, or you may have been in therapy before and felt like something was never quite reached. Either way, we will meet you where you are.

You will benefit from therapy if:

  • You experience anxiety, worry, or physical tension that interferes with your daily life, relationships, or sleep.
  • You are navigating a major life transition — divorce, career change, loss, empty nest, or a relationship ending — and feel unmoored.
  • You are struggling after birth with postpartum anxiety, intrusive thoughts, birth trauma, or a loss of identity in new motherhood.
  • You are in perimenopause or menopause and finding that mood, anxiety, or old wounds are resurfacing in unexpected ways.
  • You carry relationship pain from childhood, past partnerships, or patterns that keep repeating and you don’t know how to break.
  • You feel disconnected from yourself — going through the motions, people-pleasing, or running on empty.
  • You want to understand yourself more deeply and build a life that feels authentically yours.

There are some situations where our practice may not be the right fit right now.

These include active and unstabilized severe mental illness, or situations where ongoing substance use is the primary presenting concern. If you are in either of these situations, we encourage you to seek specialized outpatient support first. Please see our Resources page for links to local supports in Burlington, Halton Region, and across Ontario.

If you are unsure whether we are the right fit, please reach out — a free 15-minute consultation is the best way to find out.

Women’s Issues We Support

Every woman who comes to our practice arrives with her own story. These are the areas our team has particular depth and experience in:

Postpartum Anxiety & Birth Trauma

Becoming a mother is one of the most significant transitions a woman experiences — and it doesn’t always feel the way we expected. Whether you’re dealing with postpartum anxiety, intrusive thoughts, a difficult birth experience, or a complicated sense of identity in early motherhood, you’re not alone and you’re not failing. We offer trauma-informed support that helps you process what happened, regulate your nervous system, and find your footing as a mother and as yourself.

Perimenopause & Menopause Counselling

The hormonal shifts of perimenopause and menopause are real — and for many women, they bring an unexpected emotional reckoning. Old anxiety resurfaces. Past trauma that felt managed suddenly feels present again. Mood, sleep, and sense of self all shift. We understand the deep connection between hormonal transition and psychological wellbeing, and we offer specialized support to help you navigate this season with clarity and compassion.

Life Transitions: Divorce, Career Change, Identity Rebuilding

Divorce. A career change. An empty nest. A move. An identity shift. Major transitions can leave you feeling unmoored even when they’re the right decisions. Therapy helps you grieve what you’re leaving behind, clarify who you’re becoming, and build a sense of stability that comes from within — not from your circumstances.

Relationship & Attachment Trauma

Our earliest relationships shape how we see ourselves and others. If you grew up without consistent emotional safety — or have experienced painful relationships as an adult — those patterns often show up in anxiety, self-doubt, difficulty trusting, or cycles that feel impossible to break. We work gently and carefully with attachment wounds, helping you understand where these patterns came from and how to build something different.

Anxiety & Self Esteem

Anxiety in women often looks different from the clinical descriptions. It can show up as perfectionism, people-pleasing, overachieving, or a constant undercurrent of dread that you’ve learned to function through. Low self-worth is not a character flaw. It is often a very logical response to past experiences, and it can change.

Therapy for women helps you feel grounded, clear, and more fully yourself.

Our team at Christina Janiga Psychotherapy uses evidence-based, trauma-informed approaches tailored specifically to what each woman brings. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all therapy. We believe in meeting you exactly where you are and working at a pace that feels right.

Our core approaches for women’s therapy include:

  • EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) — one of the most researched therapies for trauma and anxiety, working at the level of memory and nervous system processing.
  • EMDR Intensives — extended half-day or full-day sessions for women who want to make deep progress more quickly. Ideal for busy mothers, professionals, or anyone ready to commit dedicated time to healing.
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) — an attachment-based approach that helps you understand the different ‘parts’ of yourself with self-compassion rather than self-criticism.
  • Brainspotting — a brain-based approach that accesses and releases trauma held below conscious thought, without requiring you to verbalize every detail.
  • Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) — a leading-edge trauma therapy working at the level of the brainstem to release shock-based responses.
  • CBT and mindfulness-based approaches — for building practical skills in regulating anxiety, managing intrusive thoughts, and developing coping strategies that actually fit your life.

We approach all therapy from a trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming perspective. You will not be rushed, minimized, or handed a worksheet and sent on your way.

Affordable Therapy for Women — Our Intern Program

We know cost can be a real barrier to accessing therapy. Our Counselling Intern Program offers reduced-rate sessions with therapists completing their Master’s degrees in Counselling Psychology, registered with the CRPO as Registered Psychotherapists (Qualifying).

All our interns are specifically trained at their onboarding in women’s issues, including postpartum and maternal mental health, perimenopause and menopause, life transitions, relationship and attachment trauma, and anxiety and self-esteem. Every intern session is clinically supervised by Christina Janiga, Certified EMDR Therapist, Approved EMDR Consultant, and DBR Therapist.

This is specialized, supervised, trauma-informed support at a reduced rate. See our Counselling Internship Program page or our Pricing page for current intern fees.

YOUR NEXT STEPS

Therapy for women is meant to help you reconnect with yourself, process what’s been weighing on you, and build a life that feels genuinely yours. Together, you and your therapist will set goals, work at your pace, and develop strategies that fit your actual life — not a generic template.

Book a free 15 minuted consultation call.

If you are interested in seeking therapy, we encourage you to reach out for a free 15-minute consultation. During the call, we will answer your questions, learn a little about what brings you here, and help you find the right therapist or intern on our team. Feeling comfortable with your therapist is essential for a successful therapeutic relationship.

Invest in your healing.

Investing in yourself is one of the most important steps you can take toward the happiness and fulfillment you deserve. By working with a trained, trauma-informed professional, you can finally get to the root of what’s keeping you stuck — and find solutions that are tailored to who you actually are and what you actually need.

First Intake Session

During this initial 90-minute session, you will meet with your therapist to define the therapeutic relationship and review informed consent. Your therapist will gather information about your biological, psychological, and social history and how it is impacting your current situation. Together you will define your goals going forward.

Fees vary between therapists. See our Pricing page.

Ongoing Therapy

Commit to at least 4 weekly 50-minute sessions (either in person at our Burlington office or virtually online across Ontario). We find that clients who cannot commit to at least 4 weekly sessions tend to have more difficulty establishing a therapeutic relationship and often sessions consist of recapping the previous week rather than working toward treatment goals.

Fees vary between therapists. See our Pricing page.

Frequently asked questions about therapy for women

We support women experiencing postpartum anxiety and birth trauma, perimenopause and menopause-related mood and anxiety changes, life transitions (divorce, career change, empty nest, midlife identity shifts), relationship and attachment trauma, general anxiety, low self-esteem, and people-pleasing patterns. Our therapists adapt their approach to your unique situation.

No. Many of the women we work with do not have a formal diagnosis. If you are struggling — with anxiety, grief, a sense of disconnection, a difficult transition, or something you can’t quite name — that is enough of a reason to reach out.

Our therapists understand the specific ways trauma, anxiety, and life stress show up in women’s lives — including how hormonal transitions like perimenopause can reactivate old wounds, how women are often conditioned to minimize their own distress, and how the roles women carry can make it harder to recognize and prioritize their own needs. We bring that understanding into every session.

Yes. Our team includes therapists trained in trauma-informed approaches for postpartum and perinatal mental health. Our counselling interns are also trained at the onset of their practicum in maternal mental health. If you are a new mother struggling with postpartum anxiety, intrusive thoughts, birth trauma, or the identity shifts of early motherhood, please reach out.

Talk therapy works primarily through conversation and insight. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) works at the level of memory processing and the nervous system, addressing trauma and anxiety at the root rather than the narrative. Many women find that EMDR reaches things that years of talk therapy did not. We often use both in combination, depending on what best fits your needs and readiness.

The length of therapy varies depending on the depth and complexity of what you are working on. Some clients experience significant relief within 8–12 sessions. Others benefit from longer-term support. We set goals together and review progress regularly so you are always clear on where you are in the process.

Yes. Our Counselling Intern Program offers reduced-rate sessions with supervised therapists completing their Master’s degrees in Counselling Psychology. Our interns are trained at the beginning of their practicum specifically in women’s issues. See our Pricing page for current intern session fees.

Yes. All of our therapists offer secure virtual sessions across Ontario via JaneVideo, a Canada-based encrypted video platform that meets all Ontario and Canadian privacy requirements. Virtual therapy is just as effective as in-person for most presentations.

The best way to find out is through a free 15-minute consultation call. During the call, we will learn a little about what brings you here and match you with the therapist or intern on our team who is best suited to your needs, goals, and schedule. You are in control of that process.
